Create An Effective Art Display

 

I’m going to give you some guidelines from interior designers for displaying art, but remember that rules are made to be broken – adapt them or make up your own rules if these don’t work for you. You will want your masterpiece to be the focal point and to let the viewer fully appreciate the piece of work. Do not buy art just because it coordinates with your furnishings. Adding pillows to your sofa in a similar color as in your artwork or using a fruit bowl with like shades can be a nice touch. Usually, professionals advise hanging art at eye level. You can also display your art by setting it on a wall shelf or bookcase shelf, or simply lean it up against the wall, leaving it sitting on the floor. This method does well with the larger, framed art pieces. In any case, white is the best choice for matting your art work. For a touch of color you can double mat the artwork.  Place a colored mat behind the white one with just a sliver of color showing at the edge.

 

Creating a sense of balance is the goal of making an artwork grouping. When grouping together different sized pieces, you must line up the center of each piece, not any of the outside edges. The best way to accomplish this without having to put unnecessary holes in your wall is by mapping it out on a piece of paper first. All those spaces between the frames will turn into their own details. After you have your artwork pieced together, then you should think about how far apart you are going to place each piece from one another. In order to avoid crowding, leave a minimum of 1.5″ between each piece when the art is of the same dimension. Even if all the art work or photos you are arranging are the exact same size, you should still sketch out their hanging order or put them out on the floor before you start hammering nails into your wall. To make your grouping more appealing use frames of different sizes and shapes. Contemporary art looks best in simple frames. Impressionistic or traditional paintings, however, are usually shown off to better advantage in more elaborate frames.

 

Mats can be used to make any piece of art seem larger and more impressive. An eggshell or white paint can really compliment your art to its best advantage. Designing your ideal space should include artwork from the get-go and it should not be an afterthought. However, you will be more pleased with the results if you choose your artwork ahead of time and draw inspiration from the colors and textures that are in it. The face is brown and black, while richly embossed aluminum adds beautiful textures. “This mask is used by several pygmy peoples of the Congo, formerly known as Zaire. Hunters wear the mask to disguise their faces and this helps them catch their game,” the artisan explains. He names it Latu, meaning “Disguise.”

African wood mask, ‘My Good Friend’ (Ghana) $52.95 “This mask is a very special one, which not many people have or know about,” says Awudu Saaed of this replica. “Nigeria’s Hausa people only give it to a man after he has been of immense help to the person giving the mask. It is called Fulo meaning ‘great friend’ and it is given as a symbol of gratitude.” The sese wood mask is carved by hand and adorned with painted details and embossed aluminum plates.

Ivoirian wood African mask, ‘Dan Comic’ (Ghana) $69.95 Bright colors distinguish this jovial personage, immortalized as a mask.
